“The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action.” — John Dewey
Wow. So I have an app on my phone that gives me an inspirational or thought-provoking quote every day (and more if I want to overdose on inspiration!). This is today’s.
It brought up a lot of thoughts and feelings for me, but if I had to pick my top of the top, I’d say the following (ahem, clears throat):
All too often, people can become ‘stuck’ in a pattern or way of life that doesn’t serve them any longer because they think there’s no alternative. And I get that. I’ve totally done that whole shebang before, and I am a coach! Have you ever said ANY of the following:
Anyone? Good ol’ John Dewey really nailed this one for me. It’s hard to see when you live your own life day in and day out, but your self is really created day by day. You say you can’t do something because it’s not your personality or not you? You’re not gonna do it, yo.
But I found a lil bit of power in John’s notion that your world isn’t completely constructed already with no wiggle room. You’re actually in control. And whatever new thing you decide to do doesn’t have to necessarily be circumnavigating the globe in a hot air balloon. It could just be taking those salsa classes you’ve always wanted to take but never had the guts. Or it could be talking to the cute guy at the yoga studio but never thought you’d strike up the nerve. Whatever!
