L&D Community Roundup: Marie Hastreiter, Human Resources Manager at Joyride

Once a month, we profile a member of our L&D community for two reasons: ya’ll should know one another and share resources AND we want to give you pithy quick takeaways you can bring back to your desk (and life!) to enhance it in some way. Marie, Hastreiter, HR Manager for Joyride is really bringing the goodies today. Here are edited excerpts from our conversation.

 

  1. What mindset shift has been the biggest game changer for you for how you view your role and the challenges of working in L&D?

 

I would frame it around this concept of divergent versus adaptive thinking. People often approach problems as if there’s one answer- one way to get to a conclusion or however they want to build a program. The majority of the time there’s not one solution at all and instead multiple ways to be effective. (Adaptive thinking). When organizational cultures or even individuals get stuck in their mode of thinking, it’s because they’re set in their ways and truly believe that they landed on the best option. Instead, this is about being open to it not looking like you thought it would. It’s bringing awareness to the situation and  being mindful of things you say to yourself that can really get you stuck like, “This isn’t going to work,” or “I’ve seen that done before,” but you’re not actually listening to what their end goal is or their process. You’re missing the point. So it’s first about awareness of your patterns and then taking a pause to identify where there are commonalities in approaches and explore from there.

 

  1. In the last 5 years, what new belief, behavior or habit has most improved your life?

 

I really shifted my viewpoint on things and am really aware of language. Our natural tendency is to go to victim and powerlessness mode and I’m aware of moving language and mindset to accountability and power. Simple example of the words we use matter. For instance, ‘How’s your week treating you?” Something a lot of people use often without a thought can put the person in a mindframe of ‘things happening to you’ and victim mindset. Instead, you actually have influence over situations.  I’m trying to frame things in terms of ‘how can I influence things to create the week, day, or outcome i’m looking for.” People focus on what’s happening TO them at work, and what can you do to change course- that’s what can you can control.

 

  1. When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?

 

I try to become really attuned to my body and the physical signals  that arise when I’m overwhelmed or stressed. For me, it’s a tingly feeling that goes through my hands or an actual gut reaction.  I either simply take a few deep breaths. Or I go into what I call introvert time – I unplug to refresh at home, or at work I take a 15 minute break. Something else I tangibly do is that I write out a big problem or issue I’m trying to solve and then break it into chunks on paper. A good manicure and a lipstick also help!

 

  1. How has a failure or “failure” set you up for future success?

 

I went to law school and graduated and I did employment litigation and I hated it. I realized 4-5 years “too late” that while I was capable of doing well, it did not feel like my strengths were being utilized and it didn’t speak to what I thrive off. So it felt like a failure in that I had made this huge investment of time,  money and energy into law school and practicing and feeling that if I leave this, Am I a joke? I switched gears and realized everything has a purpose in my life. The legal education has allowed me to think in a way that allows me to bring it to business, and allows me to be at the level I’m currently at- I credit law school and practicing law with that.

 

  1. What are bad recommendations you hear in your field?

 

More of what I’m seeing is not bad recommendations, but instead people not taking the time to understand the nuance of a recommendation or a theory or a concept. A perfect example of this – the concept of radical candor. I fully agree with the theory behind it. All the best feedback comes from someone you trust, they give it to you straight, but in a way that shows they care about you. And I feel like more and more in today’s world people are quick to read a headline and they think to know the contents, they’re skimming through and not giving the investment of time to get into the details. For me I see a problem with this.  There’s great advice out there but people are misinterpreting it. “I’m following this concept of radical candor- I’m being honest with you.” But you’re missing half the point- you still have to care about your tone, tact behind it and more. We’ve become such a skimming culture. Bottom line: There’s good advice to start with- the problem is there’s so few people taking the time to understand it to role model it together, and then they miseducate people on the wrong way to go about it and it spirals.
