Episode 025: How to Make a Winding Career Path Work for You

Winding career path

You know that quote about how you can’t connect the dots looking forward, only looking backward?

Sure, it kind of makes sense—you can’t figure out how everything fits together until you can see all the pieces—but it’s SO frustrating when you’re in the thick of it. After all, you want to KNOW whether your choices now are going to lead to your most fulfilling career in 5, 10, 20 years.

Our speaker this week, Felami Burgess, has the perfect example of a career path that you couldn’t possibly have plotted in advance. While her career started in acting, she’s now a writer, media producer, filmmaker, educator, author, and founder of Creative Direction, an in-progress media company to inspire women over 35 to experience the indescribable amazement of solo travel. And she does it all with the lens of giving more of a voice to women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community.

I don’t want to spoil how she got from A to B—you’ll have to listen to this week’s show, Episode 025: How to Create a Life You Love With Your Unique Intersection, for all the juicy details—but I promise you that looking back at her winding path, every step played an important role. And she shares with us the perspective that helped her feel comfortable with each move she made, even if it didn’t totally make sense a the time.

I’m hoping that by hearing a detailed account of Felami’s career and how it all turned out okay, you’ll feel MUCH more comfortable being “in the moment” on your path instead of always stressing about where it’s leading you, and that you’ll be able to create more time for play and experimentation along the way. After all, it’s not about the destination, it’s about learning from (and enjoying) the journey.

In addition to a thorough look at what we can all learn from Felami’s path, we’ll dig into:

  • How to turn bumps and deviations into positive growth
  • Why it’s valuable to say yes to surprising opportunities—even if they’re not part of your “plan”
  • That it’s okay to do things that you eventually decide to let go of
  • How so many different types of work can relate back to your core mission
  • How travel can help you create the space to evaluate where you want to go, and open up new possibilities

What do you think about the different approaches we’re talking about this month in terms of figuring out your next move? Share stories, struggles and more in the comments below.
